Geography of Jammu

Jammu, is one of the noteworthy regions of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Jammu region comprises about 46% of the state of Jammu and Kashmir and spreads across an area of a little over 26000 square kilometres. With a population density of more than 44 lakhs, it comprises of the districts of Doda, Udhampur, Kathua, Poonch, Samba, Reasi, Ramban, Kishtwar Rajouri  and Jammu. The city of Jammu lies in the hilly terrain of the Shivalik hills.

The Shivalik range surrounds it in the north, east and southeast and the mighty Trikuta range surrounds it in the northwest. It is situated at a distance of 600 kilometers from the National capital, Delhi. Altitude of the city of Jammu is at 327m and spreads  across 167 square kilometres.

The airport is at Satwari, the city spreads on the banks of the river Tawi, with the old city being comfortable placed ont he right bank and on the left bank, one finds the spread of the upcoming new sections of the city.

Climate of Jammu

Jammu, being the northernmost region in India, faces subtropical and humid climate.  With temperatures soaring up to 46 Degree Celsius in the summer and dropping to below sub zero levels in winters. The hottest and the coldest months are June and January respectively. The monsoon knock on the doors of Jammu, post a humid summer and Jammu has a record of rainfall up to 669 m in some of the months, which witness a heavy downpour.

Best Time to Visit Jammu

The ideal time to visit the city of Jammu, so that one can have a nice travel time and leisurely vacation is from September to April, when the temperatures are moderate and conducive to travel and sightseeing along with other adventure sports.

Population of Jammu

According to the data from the census of 2011, the population of Jammu which falls under the jurisdiction of the Jammu Municipal Corporation was 503,690 and the population of Jammu urban areas including the new extensions of the city was 651,826.

The demographic constitution of the city is as follows:
  • Males - 52.7% of the population
  • Females -47.3% of the population

Against the national average of 940, the sex ratio was 898 females per 1,000 males.
Jammu has off late registered itself as one of the most progressive regions with a high average literacy rate of 89.66%, which is much higher than the national average of 74.4%.

The number of male literacy stood at a whopping 93.13%, which was much higher than the female literacy, which was at 85.82%.

Around 8.5% of the population were children of below 6 years of age. Being populated mostly by the inhabitants of the Dogra tribe, the major spoken language is Dogri followed by Hindi, Kashmiri, Punjabi, Urdu and English.
