The city of Jammu also has all the essential services like the The Fire & Emergency Services. The fire stations of Jammu are a part of The Fire & Emergency Services of Jammu and Kashmir. This establishment came into force in the year 1893 as Srinagar Fire Brigade. During its initial days some of the fire stations in some towns were staffed with only a few men.
The Fire stations of Jammu have undergone a series of progressive enhancements and have come a long way from the days when axes were used for slashing planks and rafters of burning buildings and buckets were used for throwing water. The path of progression also witnessed steam engines which were made operational by burning firewood to heat up water and were taken to places in carts pulled by firemen. This department is currently the 4th largest Fire Services of the country and is the 3rd oldest Fire Brigade of the country after Mumbai (1803) and Kolkata (1822). This department operates 168 fire stations which are spread all across the state.
This department has been rechristened to Fire and Emergency services due to the wide gamut of responsibilities that has been ushered in on them. Their scope of work encompasses the duties of rescue and fire fighting, disaster management, Rescue from earthquakes, floods, land slides, avalanches, catastrophes and conflagrations, road & rail accidents and Air crashes, under-water rescue besides man-made disasters like war, air raids and bomb blasts.
