Transport Facilities in Jammu

Air Travel in Jammu

Being the northernmost city of India and one of the most popular tourist attractions, an option of connectivity by air is imperative. The only airport that caters to all the air travel requirements in Jammu is the Jammu Airport, also christened as the Satwari Airport. This airport is located at a distance of 14 km from the international border of India-Pakistan.

The only railway station in Jammu is the Jammu Tawi railway station, which is the largest railway station of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a major connecting point for tourists proceeding towards the Kashmir Valley. This railway station has an immaculate planning in terms of connectivity with all major cities of India and it goes by the station code JAT. This is the focal point of origination of many vital trains which connect to different parts of the country.

The Himsagar Express, which goes to Kamyakumari, Tamil Nadu, is the second longest running train in India, in terms of time and distance and it originates from this station, Jammu Tawi and covers the entire distance in 70 hours.

Bus Services in Jammu:

There is a brilliant inter city connectivity because of the availability of daily bus services  which operate from Jammu to Srinagar, Delhi, Amritsar, Ambala, Chandigarh, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Pathankot, Shimla, Manali and Haridwar.
 
Apart from the J&K SRTC the road transport corporations of other cities like Delhi, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Chandigarh also ply their bus services between Jammu and various cities in north India.  The interstate bus services operate to and from the Jammu General Bus Stand. There is a wide range of choices available to the visitor and they can choose the kind of bus they want to travel in, depending on the budget, duration and comfort.

The most common kinds are the Super deluxe, deluxe/ video coaches and A-class buses  which travel to Srinagar and the starting point could either be the railway station or  the Tourist Reception Centre.  Also available are the B-class buses to Srinagar which leave from the General Bus Stand. There are also some private travel agencies which operate their deluxe and super deluxe coaches.

Tourist Taxis 

There is a provision of a shared system of travel in tourist taxis. These are mainly Tata Sumos which ply between Jammu and Srinagar and are managed by private operators.
 There is also availability of Taxi’s for sightseeing within the Jammu city and can be hired at Jammu from the Special Tourist Taxi Association, Tourist Reception Centre. They will also provide taxi’s for a visit to nearby towns like Katra, Kathua etc.

A visit to some of the architectural grandeurs and historical delights is included in the local sightseeing tour,  which spread across a duration of 2-3 hours. The places which are frequented often by the tourists are: Amar Mahal Museum, Dogra Art Gallery, Ranbireshwar Temple, Raghunath Mandir, Bahu Fort and Bagh-e-Bahu.
