Road Trip from Jammu to Leh

Jammu and Leh in Jammu and Kashmir State are places with unparallel beauty. These places with panoramic landscapes are flocked with tourists from all corners of the world throughout the year. It is possible to reach Leh, one of the most spectacular places in the Himalayas, from Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir, through road. Direct bus services are not available from Jammu to Leh but travelers can reach Srinagar by bus and then take buses to Leh.

Road Trip from Jammu to Leh

Most of the people prefer to take private vehicles to travel directly from Jammu to Leh by road so that they can enjoy the scenic beauty during the journey. Hiring private vehicles would ensure that you take halts in between as per your convenience. The total road distance between Jammu and Leh is about 741 KM and it takes about 15 – 16 hours to cover this distance.
 

Road Guide from Jammu to Leh

As it takes quite a considerable time to reach Leh from Jammu, you should start your journey in the early morning. It is advisable to pack your breakfast or have it on the road. After having morning tea, you should get ready for your journey. If you are starting at 6 AM then you will manage to reach Leh by late evening. Though you will get filling station in between but it is safe to have sufficient fuel for your vehicle before you start off with your journey.

The first major landmark to reach during the journey is to reach Jammu Flyover that is leading towards Tawi Bridge. You will have to drive towards southeast direction for the same. You will have to pass Dogra Chowk. Within 500 m, you will get Shiv Parvati temple on the left side of the road and you will have to turn right to remain on the Tawi Bridge. After driving for some time you will reach Jammu Flyover and then you will have to take the ramp.

After driving for about 1.3 KM , you will have to turn left and keep driving for 3.2 KM. you will get National Highway No. 144 A(earlier it was NH 1C) after taking two left turns from the ramp. NH 144A is an offshoot of NH 144, a road that is part of NH 44. Towards left, you will get K.N. Filling Station. Keep traveling for 20 KM and then you will have to turn right to remain on the National Highway No. 144 A.

You would surely feel hungry after continuous driving so now it is time to get energized. If you are carrying breakfast packets, you can stop the car and have it or else you have to get down for your breakfast at any dhaba or restaurant located on the National Highway or close to it. After you are through with your breakfast, order for a cup of tea or coffee. You can also enjoy cold lassi or fruit juice if tea/coffee is not your choice.  Now it is time to get ready for the next part of your road trip.

Jammu to Leh by Road

After crossing 44.3 KM you will now turn right and take Surankot - Chandimarh Road which becomes Mughal Road when turned towards left. You will pass by mosques, dargas while you are driving on the Mughal Road. This right part of this road is called Mughal Road Pass but you will take the left turn to continue driving on the Mughal Road. You will pass by Shopian Circuit House and you will get Pulwama – Srinagar Road. You will continue driving on this road and after some time you will cross Pulwama District Hospital which is situated on the right side of this road. After driving for 20.3 KM you will now turn left to get onto National Highway 1A.

You will come across Mubrak Hospital that is located on the left side of the road. After reaching Mominabad Chowk, it is time to take right turn and get onto Batamaloo – Momin Abad Road. You keep driving on the left for another 1.6 KM and then turn left after reaching Butt Enterprises and get Iqbal Abad Lane. Then a right turn has to be taken to get Bemina Main Road and keep driving. You will pass through Chattabal Chowk and get Mughal Mohalla Lane when you turn left.
 
On the way from Jammu to Leh

After driving for another 500 m, you will get Safa Kadal Bridge when you take right turn.  You will get Qamarwari – Eidgah Road after some time. At Sekidaffar Chowk Graveyard, you will get Dr. Ali Jan Road and you will come across Srinagar Eidgah. After another 55 KM you can get onto Ganderbal Road on the left and continue driving on this road till you get onto National Highway 1D. Keep driving on this National Highway and at the same time look for dhabas or eateries to have sumptuous lunch with local delicacies. Zaiqa restaurant at Ganderbal can be an ideal place to enjoy a delicious meal. Have your meal properly because you will have to remain on the road for quite some time. With full stomach you will enjoy the wonderful surroundings more. From Srinagar, Leh is about 450 KM away so by late evening you are there in Leh.
 
After such a long road trip, you will definitely need to relax the whole night. Now it is time to freshen up at your accommodation booked at Leh, have delicious dinner and enjoy a sound sleep.
