Maulana Azad Stadium in Jammu

Named after one of the freedom fighters the stadium of Jammu is one of the home grounds of the Jammu and Kashmir cricket association teams. This stadium is named the Maulana Azad Stadium, which was constructed in reverence and remembrance of the great freedom fighter. This stadium is located on the banks of the famous Tawi River.  It is situated in the place named Nawabad in Jammu. This place is one of the symbols of the sporting culture of Jammu and is held in great reverence by the state level cricketers.

Maulana Azad Stadium has been the centre stage for the domestic level cricket matches from a long time. It was in the year 1966, that the first domestic cricket match was played on this ground. It also played a host to one of the international cricket matches between India and New Zealand in the year of 1988, however, the match was washed off due to heavy downpour and rains. The stadium has hosted a women’s test match between India and West Indies and one Women's One Day International between India and New Zealand in 1985.

This is also a multipurpose ground as it serves as a parade ground for Republic Day celebrations every year. A lodging centre at the stadium provides shelter to a number of pilgrims who are on their way of a religious trip to Amarnath and this is the place from where the Yatra is flagged off officially.

It is a normal practice and ritual for the Governor of the state to address the general public by witnessing the celebrations of Republic Day. It is usually done by saluting the parade which normally has a minimum of  thirty to forty thousand people in attendance. As a part of security measures there is a precedence of digging up the entire ground. An ancient structure of  plastered lime and brick was discovered in the year 2000. It was reported by a print daily that the structure was related to water since a drain was found.

There are many rallies and other public events that take place in this stadium or usually have this stadium as their commencement point.

The stadium can be easily reached at by road as the connectivity with Nawabad is very comprehensive and robust. This is located in close vicinity to the Tawi bridge.The 4th Tawi bridge road and the Canal road lead to the Tawi Bridge and from here the adjoining area of Nawabad can be reached.

In short, this is the most revered spot by the cricket lovers of Jammu and it is a symbol of the sport loving fraternity that exists in Jammu.
