Directorate of Indian System of Medicine (AYUSH) J&K

Directorate of I.S.M was established in 1987, and in the erstwhile era, it was a part of Department of Health Services J&K. It used to function under the managerial control of Directorate of Health services. It is since then that the Directorate has been rendering untiring and relentless service in the Health care delivery system. It is not stopped or hindered by the low allocation of budget. This Department gets only 4.61% of budgetary allocation when compared to the health department.

The Department provides health care to the people all over the State particularly in remote and interior areas by the dint of a network of 417 sanctioned Ayurvedic and Unani dispensaries and 68 internal-arrangement ISM Institutions. The people of Jammu are mostly used to the traditional form of medicine due to lesser accessibility to high end medical facilities due to the restrictions of a hilly terrain or due to conservative beliefs.

Some of the works undertaken by the Directorate include the construction of a  25 bedded Govt. Ayurvedic Hospital in Jammu, an I.S.M Pharmacy and a 50 bedded Hospital in Srinagar in addition to the already functioning 485 dispensaries including one  Ayurvedic Hospital at Jammu. All major Govt, run allopathic hospital and Medical Colleges have proper established AYUSH units. Efforts are on to endorse and encourage Medical tourism with the introduction of Panchkarma Units at International Golf Course and other health resorts.

The two Medical Colleges, namely, one at Brepur Jammu, and another at Ganderbal, Kashmir has also been set up. This department is striving to cater accessibility of superior quality medicines to the people of Jammu and keeping that objective in sight a Drug Laboratory has been set up in Jammu.
In totality, Jammu’s medical and health scenario is on a path of constant upgradation and improvement in order to provide best in class health care facilities to its citizens.
